Snowed In? Here’s When Telehealth Physical Therapy Makes Sense

A New England snowstorm (or you know, the largest snowstorm to ever hit Providence in over 40 years) has a way of slowing everything down. Roads get messy. Schedules shift. Plans change.

But your progress doesn’t have to.

If you’re in the middle of physical therapy and the weather makes it tough (or unsafe) to travel, telehealth can be a simple, effective way to stay consistent — and sometimes it’s even more helpful than people expect.

Here’s when switching to a virtual visit makes sense and how to make the most of it.

When It’s Smart to Switch to Telehealth

Telehealth isn’t a replacement for hands-on care when that’s needed. But in many situations, it’s a seamless way to keep momentum going.

It can be a great option when:

  • Travel conditions are unsafe
  • You’re feeling under the weather but still able to move
  • You need a progression or adjustment to your program
  • You’re early in care and focusing on education and movement patterns
  • You’re checking in after surgery and need guidance on next steps

Consistency matters in recovery. Missing one visit during a storm isn’t catastrophic — but staying connected to your plan, especially in the early stages of rehab, helps keep you confident and on track.

What Conditions Work Well Virtually?

You might be surprised at how much can be accomplished through a screen.

Common concerns that work especially well with telehealth include:

  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain and headaches
  • Knee pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Post-operative check-ins
  • Balance and mobility work
  • Exercise progression and return-to-activity planning

A big part of physical therapy is assessment, education, and guided movement — all of which translate well to a virtual setting when led by an experienced clinician.

In fact, research over the past several years has shown that virtual physical therapy can be just as effective as in-person care for many musculoskeletal conditions when it’s thoughtfully delivered and personalized.

How to Prepare for a Telehealth PT Visit

The good news: you don’t need a home gym.

A few simple things go a long way:

  • A stable chair
  • A towel
  • A small open space where you can move
  • A resistance band (if you have one)
  • A phone, tablet, or laptop with a camera

Before your visit, wear comfortable clothing and make sure your device is positioned so your physical therapist can see you move. That’s it.

Your clinician will guide the rest — just like they would in the clinic.

Is It Still Safe and Personalized?

Absolutely.

Your physical therapist will walk you through movements in real time, observe how you’re performing them, and make adjustments just as they would in person. Telehealth sessions are one-on-one and individualized, just like every visit at Highbar.

And if something feels better suited for hands-on care, we’ll tell you. Telehealth isn’t about replacing in-person treatment — it’s about making sure weather, travel, or scheduling challenges don’t interrupt your recovery.

Staying on Track — Even When the Weather Isn’t

Snowstorms are part of life in New England. So is wanting to feel better, move better, and return to what you love.

Telehealth gives us another way to show up for you — safely, thoughtfully, and with the same commitment to personalized care.

If weather ever makes it difficult to get to the clinic, just let us know. We’re always happy to explore options that keep you progressing and feeling supported, no matter what’s happening outside.
